City Methodist Church in Gary, Indiana.
(photo by slworking2)This impressive church opened in 1926 after 21 months of construction, which cost over a million dollars. Built in traditional English Gothic style the building was not only built to be a church but an entire place for the community to gather. The entire church was home to the cathedral - of course - but also classrooms, an auditorium, a rooftop garden and a gymnasium.
In the 1960’s the city of Gary - similar to Detroit - had it difficult to adapt to the industrial revolution and many businesses became bankrupt. Many people moved to other places and crime and poverty rose in the city. In 1973 the church only had 300 members - it had 3000 members in its heyday. The Methodists decided to relocate and they sold the church but nothing was done with it.
The church is now owned by the city of Gary but they have no future plans for it. The building was badly damaged in a fire in 1997.
